In youth, I never had the luxury of skipping the part of development where you can literally feel your bones aching as if some invisible force was trying to pull them apart. I remember feeling frightened by the ignorance of why certain parts of my body would randomly start hurting during the day and why I felt like I was the only one who experienced this in my entire class. “It’s just growing pains honey,” mama would say. She also explained to me that not everyone goes through them at the same time and not everyone’s experience would be the same. I think this was my introduction to the actuality of the word “growth”. It became this idea of knowing I was in the process of elevating to a higher level but that it would not happen in the absence of challenge.
